Lovlina Borgohain dropped a note on her social media handles where she pledged to make a strong comeback after her disappointing campaign in Paris Olympics 2024. Back in 2021, Lovlina became only the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh and Mary Kom to win a boxing medal for India in the quadrennial event. But the Assam-born Lovlina would find it pretty hard to avoid the limelight if she manages to bring a medal in Paris. She received the Arjuna Award in 2020 for her remarkable boxing performance making her the sixth Assamese individual to receive the renowned honour. In 2021, Borgohain participated in the Boxam International boxing tournament in Spain, where she lost 0-5 to Russia’s Saadat Dalgatova in the quarterfinals. Lovlina, currently the World No. 3, had earlier beaten World No. 2 Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taipei 4-1 in the quarterfinals to ensure herself of a medal. Turkey’s Surmeneli had won both her previous matches at this Olympics by unanimous decision and she won this match in similar fashion too. Lovlina started boxing in 2012 when coach Padum Boron invited her to Guwahati.
Mirabai Chanu: Silver in Weightlifting
Hailing from the Golaghat district of Assam, Lovlina started as a kickboxer (like her elder twin sisters Licha and Lima Borgohain), before switching to boxing in 2012. She burst into the spotlight after winning bronze at the 2017 Asian Championships and gold at the 2018 India Open. Lovlina had defeated highly-accomplished opponents in her two previous rounds. Chen was a former world champion, while round of 16 opponent Nadine Apetz is also a two-time medalist at the Worlds, winning bronze in 2016 and 2018. She secured her qualification for Paris at the Africa Boxing Qualifiers in Dakar, defeating Kenya’s Elizabeth Andiego. The now 32-year-old had previously competed in the 75 kg category in the 2016 Rio Olympics where she had reached the quarterfinal.

At a formal state event held in Guwahati Assam Lovlina Borgohain took her oath to serve as a DSP in the Assam Police. The election held during the 2022 Women’s World Championships saw Lovlina Borgohain win the most votes. Borgohain, a bronze medallist in the 69kg category at Tokyo 2020, entered her first 75kg Olympic tournament as the eighth seed. In contrast, the 20-year-old Hofstad, making her Summer Games debut, opted for an aggressive strategy in the initial rounds. However, the 27-year-old Borgohain displayed excellent defensive skills, effortlessly parrying Hofstad’s punches while countering with poise and anonymous even a smile. Despite an improved performance from the Norwegian in the third round, Borgohain’s experience and precision secured her a clear victory.
It was a closely contested round that narrowly went the Chinese boxer’s way. These trainers’ experiences highlight the significant challenges faced by aspiring athletes in Assam, where government support remains minimal despite the achievements of players like Lovlina. Boron was at the tournament to teach new techniques to all boxing freshers and was sitting next to the ring, giving marks to the players for their matches.
